Shalu (name changed) was found at a Bus Terminal by the police, abandoned and alone! As protocol dictates, 5 year old shalu was taken to the Child Welfare Committee (CWC), which gave the order for her to be sent to a Childrens’ Home. Finding herself in a new strange environment, shalu started to act out. She refused to follow instructions, would hit other children and was reported to be touching other children inappropriately.

The care givers at the home, desperate to curb this behaviour began scolding her, reprimanding her, but to no avail. She would cry, sob, hit and eventually stopped talking to all the adults in the home.

Most adults were expecting her to behave as young children are expected to behave; Greet, play and follow all that adults say. We could not see the pain behind the angry face, kept enforcing our rules and kept saying you’ll be left if you keep behaving this way.

Scared, lost shalu refused to follow, cried, sobbed and stopped talking to anyone. The result was yet again abandonment and this time with no one around, locked in a room, all alone.

"Adults failed to notice the pain hidden behind Shalu's Anger."

Trauma from experiences such as abuse, neglect, poverty and inhuman treatment can have a huge impact on a child's life.

I Am Wellbeing's initiative Udaan provides individual therapy sessions to children, adolescents & young adults from marginalized communities, struggling with trauma. It creates a contained space for emotional support and provides healing for the young lives to grow.

We support young lives struggling with the detrimental effects of Adverse Childhood Experiences, as well as conduct intensive training for professionals in care giving spaces. Our organization is a team of trauma informed therapists and counsellors who use various modalities to address the concerns our clients present. We as an organization believe in providing quality mental health support to our beneficiaries, and in order to maintain optimum standards we provide training and regular supervision to all our associated mental health professionals that join us online from different parts of the country.

We want to raise funds in order to provide that much needed healing and therapy for the young lives who are survivors of difficult life circumstances. Support us in breaking the cycle of inter-generational trauma.
