Hello everyone. I live in Kolkata with my family. The building I live in is very old yet happens to be much strong and resilient against natural forces and calamities.
However, the tiny makeshift room situated inside the premises of our compound, right outside the building, that is meant to act as the night shelter of the security guards is in a dilapidated condition. Our building has 4 security guards who work in shifts on alternate days and nights.
The floor of this room is basically made of hardened layer of mud and soil, covered with a thick plank of pitch board. The walls are made from tin, while the framework is wooden, so as to hold the tin structures in place. The wood has already suffered damages owing to the infestation of wood pecking insect pests.
The shed is made of an asbestos sheet, which can fall off any day now. The electricity connections are also not in good condition which generates a fear of short circuit. On the night of Supercyclone Amphan, we couldn't bear to leave behind our security guard and invited him in and let him stay with us in the safety of our apartment.
But that isn't a sustainable or a permanent solution, is it?
There are in total 6 families living in this building who have been catering to the needs of our security guards, through out the period of COVID-19 lockdown, by providing them with food, water, clothes, sanitizers, soaps, medicines, etc. We are providing for their families too in this need of hour. Now is the time to ensure that they feel safe during their night shifts as well, when they have to stay back and spend the night in that room.
I have therefore decided to set up a fundraiser to raise some money with your generosity and contribution, which shall be used to renovate and rebuild the room-shelter and give these people, the feel of a home away from home. The funds shall be used to purchase bricks, cement, sand, paint, wooden planks etc.
Please help me. All updates will be shared on this page. Thank you.
