I'm Anusha Swamy, I've been a part of Down Syndrome Federation Of India for the last 9 years and truly believe there needs to be more awareness about Trisomy 21.
What is Down Syndrome ?
Trisomy 21, the most common type of Down syndrome, occurs when there are three, rather than two, number 21 chromosomes present in every cell of the body. Instead of the usual 46 chromosomes, a person with Down syndrome has 47. It is this additional genetic material that alters the course of development and causes the characteristics associated with the syndrome. Trisomy 21 accounts for 95% of cases. And that is why March 21st is World Down Syndrome Day, March - 3, Date - 21, get it ?
Most frequently asked question is if it can be cured, No, because its not a disease, its a chromosomal disorder. They are not weak or in any way beneath you and I, they are just different and different is fun.
Every year we celebrate World Down Syndrome Day by doing something different, this year we are organising a small sports meet at the Nehru Park Stadium where all of you are also welcome. Around 250 people with Down syndrome from different parts of Chennai are going to be present.
This fundraiser is to provide hygiene kits to all the people with Down Syndrome who are attending the event.
The Kit consists of a cloth bag, soap, powder, comb, shampoo, napkins and sanitiser. one kit costs Rs.300
You can be assured that the money will only be going towards this and also be there on that day to witness the happiness and love.
