Mahesh foundation has been supporting HIV+ kids since 2010 with food, shelter, medicine, nutritional supplements etc. we currently support 34 orphans at our shelter “Ashakiran” in Belagavi.
With the help of generous support from corporate the foundation was able to build excellent infrastructure for a school Utkarsha learning center and shelter home. This school caters to special children from the shelter home and also underprivileged, disadvantaged & neglected children from slums of Belagavi.
Utkarsha is located in the village of Kanbaragi, a village in the suburbs’ of Belagavi. The physical infrastructure is designed to accommodate grades 1 to 10, library, audio-visual room, computer lab, dining facility and a kitchen. With the support of corporate CSR investors Utkarsha was created with the best in class infrastructure suited for first generation learners.
Utkarsha commenced operations from the academic year 2018-2019. In the first year, Utkarsha enrolled 50 children in the age group of 6 to 11 years. In conventional schools these children are in grade 1 through grade 5. Utkarsha has plans to gradually extend the classes from grade 6 to grade 10. IN the academic year 2020-2021 the school is enrolling about 100 children from grade 1 through grade 7.
The children enrolled into Utkarsha are from the poorest of the poor sections of the society living in the slums. The primary profession of their parents is rag-picking, petty sales and begging. If these children were not enrolled in the school, they would be begging or rag picking on the streets of Belgaum. In addition to the underprivileged poorest of the poor children, the academy has also enrolled HIV Positive orphan children from the foundations care home “Asha Kiran”.
All the children are provided with the required learning tools, transportation from home and are served with clean and nutritious meals in the school. The Foundations social workers ensure that every child in the slum is supported and regularly attends the school.
