I am a volunteer with HIVE India, an organisation that responds to any person at risk on the streets of Kolkata.
On 16th September 2021, we received information about a lady who had an accident and needed medical care and attention. Together with Kolkata Police officers, our team members reached the spot and administered basic first aid. Then we took her to a government hospital for further treatment. Despite all efforts for hours we were unable to admit her to any government hospital and finally brought to Hope Foundation Hospital, where she has undergone treatment for 35 days.
After the patient was provided initial care and was stable, we inquired about her details to locate and trace her family members. She identified herself as Madhumita Poddar, a resident of Nodakhali, South 24 Parganas District of West Bengal. Based on this information, we contacted Nodakhali Police Station and traced her family members. Her uncle shared her real name is Sushmita Seth and that she has been mentally disturbed and went missing from her uncle's place where she lived. Later, we also contacted her brother, who lived nearby but was unaware of her missing status.
Apart from the injuries from the accidents, she also had severe burn injuries, but she could not share much about that. Her brother visited her frequently as she was undergoing treatment at Hope hospital. She was hospitalised for 35 days and had to undergo surgery. After 35 days of treatment, she was discharged on 22nd October 2021, and the total cost of her treatment is 48,593. Her brother is a street vendor and is barely able to earn a living for his family.
