Story

Gift financial independence to marginalized LGBT+ people

• Seema, 19, a transgender woman from Barasat, near Kolkata, is an undergraduate student and needs to be financially independent to leave her abusive family. Varta is improving her soft skills to find part-time jobs.

• Raj, a Kolkata-based transgender man in his early 20s, could not enrol in undergraduate programmes because of lack of funds. Varta is assisting him to get recruited by queer-friendly organizations.

These are the requests we get daily. According to a National Human Rights Commission 2018 report, 92% of transgender people are deprived of the right to participate in any form of mainstream economic activity in India. The pandemic-related job losses have exacerbated this problem of exclusion. With the gradual lifting of the lockdown, Varta Trust has been flooded with requests for employment help from transgender people and the larger LGBT+ community. The ask may be simple, but the work isn't!

Varta Trust has been working on research, advocacy and training on economic inclusion for seven years. In June 2021, we started the Varta Economic Inclusion Mentoring Forum to provide one-on-one mentoring support to LGBT+ aspirants in eastern and north-eastern India and we have already assisted more than 20 people. We have 10 mentors from different areas of expertise to support our LGBT+ mentees in personality development, skills building, finding jobs and starting enterprises.

While our mentors volunteer their time, we require at least INR 10 lakh to scale up the programme urgently over the next two years to:

1) Engage part-time counsellors to reach out to aspirants, understand their needs, connect them to relevant mentors, and help them work out personal action plans – INR 2 lakh

2) Engage LGBT+ friendly mental health professionals and lawyers to address needs of mentees around psychosocial support and legal gender identity change – INR 1.5 lakh

3) Create multilingual guides (in English, Bengali, Hindi, Odia, Assamese and Manipuri) to help LGBT+ people secure wage employment and self-employment – INR 1.5 lakh

4) Conduct vocational training courses on communication, spoken English, computer operations, documentation, and financial literacy – INR 2.5 lakh

5) Design and implement sensitization and orientation workshops for training faculty, employers (particularly from micro, small and medium enterprises), financiers, government social welfare officials and policy makers – INR 2 lakh

6) Operational expenses to support all the activities listed above – INR 50,000

Overall break-up of funds needed:
  • Learning, training and sensitization component: INR 6 lakh (60%)
  • Resources for counselling and support services: INR 3.5 lakh (35%)
  • Operational expenses: INR 50,000 (5%)
We seek your contributions to empower marginalized LGBT+ folks like Raj and Seema and give wings to their dreams. Your immediate financial support will act as a much-needed balm during these painful times.
