[Quick note for those unfamiliar with Milaap: if you wish to donate, please know no amount is too small :) The 'Rs.2500' that you see above the 'Donate Now' icon is an automatic suggestion from Milaap, but you can enter any amount your heart feels called to share.]

This fundraiser is for 63 super-cyclone Amphan affected workers (security guards, sanitation workers, plumbers, electricians, gardeners, lift operators) in my residential complex in Kolkata, to help them rebuild their roofs and homes.

Following the devastating impact of Amphan, some of us decided to focus our energies at a very micro-level and identify who needed help amongst the many service providers and workers employed within the complex. We found that an overwhelming majority suffered severe roof and wall damage because they don’t have pucca homes, and have had asbestos, ‘tali’ (terracotta roof tiles) and ‘chal’ fly off/break, and trees collapse on their structures etc. (some photos attached).

Most of them are daily commuters and live in those districts in West Bengal that were in the direct path of Amphan, including the Sunderbans. Some of them were in the storm’s path in Kolkata.

They have not received any government aid or relief, and because of lack of funds, have been unable to repair the damage. Money is extra tight because of the challenges of 2020, while the need for a reliable shelter is even greater given the pandemic. Most of them have temporarily bought plastic sheets and tarpaulins to cover the damage. However, because the monsoons have set in already, this is a problem because plastic sheets and tarpaulins tear and leak very easily.

We are trying to raise money to help them rebuild at the earliest.

We believe communities need to take responsibility for their own. Accordingly, we did our best to put together what resources we had within the housing complex.  However, we are now falling short and could use your help.

Our goal is to give atleast Rs.3000 to each person, whose details we have compiled within a spreadsheet. We would be very, very grateful if you could help either by donating or by circulating this appeal amongst your friends and family. Or both!  :)
