Hello, all I am Kapil from Gujarat, India. I have issues in my family. I have huge issues in my family which impact hugely on us. I having suicidal thoughts every day because of my family issues and fights.
So here is everything. We are 4 members in our family mom dad and we are two brothers. My father is a farmer and we have done engineering. We have given up in a job because of low paying jobs. So we have decided to do full-time farming but the issue in our home is huge I am fed up being here at my home I think I am only who not want to be at home.
We are in this situation from so long maybe 5–6 years. We have some loans to pay almost 16.25 lac. Principal amount was something 3-4 only but it’s become huge gradually. It's kind of trap by govt. As per government data, 31 farmers commit Suicide every day: https://thewire.in/agriculture/farmer-suicides-data
Also, my father’s one’s ran away from home for 5 days then somehow I contacted and assured him to not happen again. Also, he once attempted suicide too. Timely treatment saved my father huge thanks to God. Even many bad events happened to us still fights are the same. I sleep with worries that in morning everyone is alright and alive or not because daily 31 farmers commit suicide that confirms we are not one of them.
Land washed away from over monsoon or no monsoon.
I have fear every morning that everyone is alive or not. The farmer does not deserve a little better life than this horrible situation?
Why are farmers committing suicide?
Majorly there are four reasons for farmer suicides in India;
- Financial crisis: Over dependency on agri-business companies for the seeds and pesticides. As a farmer, they buy a seed which is known as ‘killer seeds’, this means the seeds cannot be used again. Every year the farmer has to buy new seeds as well as more pesticides. The farmer borrows money and ends up in a lot of debt.
- Climate change - because if something happened to crop or land its cost huge to repair the land and result in crop failure.
- Government policies: Policymakers are neglecting the agricultural sector in India to promote urbanization.
- Societal pressure. The profession of a farmer is looked down upon.
