You might have come across the visually challenged persons selling incense sticks or books or any other products in the trains and buses. Majority of the times, they travel from one city to another selling their products and they are always on the move.

You might have wondered about their lives, where they come from, where they lived, how they survive, etc. You might have thought for minutes or hours about them and get on with your lives. The truth is, in a majority of cases, they all have their own families in some cities and they might be the only bread earner in the family.

COVID19 has turned our world upside down but its impact is different for each set of people. While businesses have closed down and running on losses, there are people who are struggling even to fulfill their basic needs. Even as the governments are doing what they can, many sections like migrant workers, daily wagers, homeless people are finding it hard to sustain their lives.

The plight of physically challenged people is always higher than that of the others and this COVID19 lockdown has affected them in more than one way. A colony of almost 75 families with at least one visually challenged person lives on the outskirts of Tiruchirappalli, Tamil Nadu. In the majority of the families, they were the sole bread earners. They were reliant on the sales of incense sticks, incense cakes, and other fragrant products in buses and trains. The COVID19 lockdown has brought their livelihood to a grinding halt.

In this time of the global pandemic, help the 72+ families of Gandhi Nagar, Nagamangalam, Tiruchirapalli to come out of the COVID19 Lockdown with dignity.

Even when the curfew is lifted, it will be a while for the normal life to return.

Help us to provide dignity to the ~75 families by providing them with the necessary monthly provisions and some spare cash.

As a regular volunteer of Kanavugal Lifeline Foundation, I've seen from close quarters, the works done by the organisation and its founder Mr. K. Saravanan. In spite of being a visually challenged person himself, Mr. Saravanan has stood tall and changed the lives of more people around him. Kanavugal Lifeline Foundation also runs a free competitive exam coaching centre for visually challenged persons in Chennai.
