Slum Dwellers belong to unorganized sector, so they have no rights to demand with the Employer or even with the Government. In any single day, if they do not work, they don’t get paid, so naturally they are pulled to starvation.
The family cannot even apply for a ration card, as they do not have any residence proof or any identity documents.
Now, let us think about them, what is the condition today after 15 days of lockdown, how will they survive without hunger.
The slum Dweller Meenakshi says that “We want to protect the children from deadly disease, but what is the use if they die of hunger instead?” she asks.
As we know that in one slum, the tested report came as Positive for the corona virus. As panic grows among them, the slum dwellers are trying to migrate to their rural homes, even by foot, because of no transport available due to lock down. We have seen the reports that many died, by walking long distance, also fear is sparking in the community that they may spread the virus to the countryside.
According to the International Labour Orgnisation, migrant workers earn daily between Rs.138 - Rs.449, which is hand to mouth, nothing more than that.
Agony and dilemma occupies their life, because of no money to purchase essentials, they are not rich to afford to stock up for the coming days. They have only two options, whether to go for work and risk infection or stay at home and face the extreme hunger.
How the Funds will be Utilised?
The cost of Grocery Pack is Rs.700, which consists of 5 KG Rice, 3 KG Wheat Flour, Cooking Oil, Sugar, Chilli Powder, Masala Powder, Salt, Onion and etc. By providing these provisions, they can postpone the hunger still everything becomes normal. With the help of this pack they may run the family for 10 to 15 days as per the size of the family.
Comprising of all zones in Madurai, there are 1,237 families suffering from the starvation, which can be eradicated by your generous donation at the possible time. The total amount comes to Rs.8,65,900= (1237 X 700).
