“One man held me at gunpoint as I watched the others throw acid on my 17-year-old daughter’s face and body. She screamed in pain, but I couldn’t do anything to help her. I couldn’t get out of his grip. Once the men ran away from the house, I ran to my daughter, she was on the floor, her whole body burning as she cried and screamed. I tried to help her. I was in shock and didn’t realise that my palms too got burnt from the acid on her body, ” – Poonam Devi, mother

Just a few minutes after the gruesome incident, Kajal’s father, Gautam, and cousin brother returned home to find Kajal on the floor and her mother struggling to help her. They used a cloth to help her sit on the chair and drove her to the hospital. It was the night of 19th April, and this 17-year-old student has been fighting for her life ever since.

She has 40% burns on her body and risks being blinded for life

Kajal is a class 11 commerce student who often kept to herself and focused on her studies. On April 19th, her simple life was ravaged by a group of men who entered her house forcibly and threw acid on her when no one else but her mother and she were at home. She is now in the hospital with severe burns on her face and upper body. She can’t talk or sit up. The acid entered her eyes, she now risks being blinded for life.

Kajal needs continued hospital care and needs to stay under strict observation to survive. She is now surviving only on fluids.

Her devastated parents refuse to leave her side as she screams in pain all day

Kajal’s parents are beyond devastated. They refuse to leave the hospital until their daughter is saved. Her mother can’t help but recall the incident over and over again, breakdown every few minutes. Her father, watches on helplessly. There’s nothing he can do.

“All we want is for her to get better, we just want to take her home. She screams in pain all day and can’t even change sides on the hospital bed. She hasn’t slept ever since the incident.” – Gautam, father

As Kajal’s parents worry for her life, her medical bills are piling up with every passing day. Gautam owns a small shop in Bhagalpur and can’t afford the treatment which would cost him around 50 lakhs.
