"Ma, where is Athwik, I want to play with him, when will he come back home?" My daughter asks me every single day, longing to play with her little brother, once again.

The most significant gift in a family is a brother. It brings joy and pleasure to those around it, but what happens when your little brother is afflicted with a heartbreaking disease?

This is the story of my little boy Athwik, who has been suffering from B-Lymphoblastic Leukemia, a type of blood cancer.

A month ago, Athwik was taken with a fever. He had shortness of breath and would often complain about feeling dizzy.

Worried he might have contracted something with the recent pandemic, we took him to the hospital for a check-up. Athwik then tested positive for the ongoing virus.

Amidst all the panic and confusion we were facing at the time, Athwik was taken in for further tests. We waited patiently, not fully aware of what the protocols were in a situation like this.

As the doctors then called for us away from our son, we knew something was wrong.

“We’re sorry to inform you, but your son Athwik seems to be suffering from blood cancer. He is also diagnosed withHyperleukocytosis, a serious complication of his blood cancer. He’ll need immediate treatment if he is to recover.”

Before I could even begin to process my emotions, there was further heartbreak.

Athwik was diagnosed with an infection in his right arm. Due to the severity of it and how it could possibly damage his cells further, the doctors informed us that they might have to amputate his arm.

My heart sank. My child, only three years old, was suffering from an onslaught of diseases and I could do nothing to help him.

Athwik has been drafted a long-term treatment plan. It requires further tests, additional stay in the hospital and a number of medical procedures.

Having already spent 12 Lakhs on his initial hospitalisation and treatments, we’ve been asked to arrange another 20 Lakhs ($ 27441.44) for his long-term plan.

Depending on his condition in the coming weeks, the doctors have stated Athwik might even need a Bone Marrow Transplant.

My husband and I are housekeepers. We barely scrape by from month to month with our children and the daily expenses we incur. The pandemic had robbed us of our livelihoods too. We have borrowed money and taken loans, and have now exhausted all of our options.

The recent months have taken a huge toll on our family. I fear that my son’s mental state might not be able to cope with the amount of stress he faces every single day.

He’s so young and is already shouldering the struggles that have brought down full-grown adults in the past.

As a mother, I beg of you. Please find it in your heart to help me save my little boy. He’s in pain and suffers every single day. Help me preserve his smile and give him a future in this world we share.

We desperately need all the help we can get. Help us, donate.🙏🙏🙏🙏🏻🙏🏻
