    This fundraiser will benefit

    Janaki Viswanathan

    from Chennai, Tamil Nadu

Johnny was found outside the premises of the Madras High Court in the southern Indian city of Chennai. A five year old golden retriever cross, he had clearly been abandoned by his family, possibly on account of his handicap. Johnny had lost the use of his hind limbs and dragged himself along on his backside, as he begged for scraps from the customers of a roadside cafe.

As one of the volunteers of Rescue Tails, an informal group of animal lovers working towards the rescue and rehabilitation of abandoned and street animals, I picked Johnny off the streets in October 2018 and moved him to a pet clinic close by. He was covered with ticks and also suffered from liver related ailments. He was treated for these conditions before being shifted to paid foster care. We also got Johnny a wheel cart to make life somewhat comfortable for him.

After he had regained his health somewhat, we set about trying to explore treatment options to help Johnny walk again. Johnny was diagnosed with Grade 4 patellar luxation on both knees, further compounded by severe muscular atrophy in his hind limbs.

On 23rd March, 2019, Johnny's left knee was successfully operated on. Although, the orthopedic condition was addressed, we were informed that we would have to back it up with intensive physiotherapy for a minimum period of twelve weeks and also other supplementary treatments including hydrotherapy, laser therapy etc. Surgery on his right knee will be undertaken after the left limb becomes functional.

For the next twelve weeks, Johnny has to be placed at a facility with access to quality care and therapy. The per day cost for this, inclusive of boarding and therapy etc is estimated at around Rs 1250/ day.

As an abandoned pet, Johnny has no family to fight for him. His hospitalization and surgery expenses have already totaled up to a significant amount. We need you to join hands with us in fighting the good fight for Johnny and giving this absolute sweetheart of a dog a chance to walk rather than drag his way through the years ahead of him.

Johnny is the most sweet tempered dog you'd ever see and despite all the blows that life has landed on, he has a sweet smile plastered on to his face at all times. As unbelievable as it sounds, he smiled even from the cage that he was placed in for post operative care.

Please come forward to be the wind beneath Johnny's sails ( hind limbs in this case) and help him soar ( walk) his way through lif
