The Shahari Mahila Kamgaar Union (SMKU) is a women workers’ unions that organizes women in informal employment, such as street vending, home-based work, domestic work, among others. The union is based out of Gautampuri, a resettlement colony—a state-provided site for housing for those families displaced by the demolition of their informal housing (or jhuggi-jhompris) in Delhi. Initially, founded as a group to work on the rights of the inhabitants of this resettlement colony as citizens and workers, the organization currently is a part of a group of initiatives that engage with various aspects of the inhabitants of Gautampuri from gender to labor rights.
Founded by a social activist, Anita Kapoor, the organization and other initiatives are run and managed by a group of young and bright minds from the settlement itself.
For the organization firmly believes in building autonomous power for the working-class people from the state and institutional funding, it usually relies on workers’ contributions and individual for its normal functioning. Due to the pandemic and the loss of jobs for the workers, the organization has been facing the dual challenge of reduced workers’ contribution and the greater need to support the workers in various ways. The financial crunch has made it impossible for us to continue paying salary to our one employee, Gudiya, who has been working very hard in these challenging times. As a our key employee, Gudiya has been responsible for mobilizing workers, leading the relief work during the pandemic, and managing overall administrative responsibilities. Supporting Gudiya will also allow the organization to run its other initiative in the settlement, Jan Soochna Kendra, which has been crucial in times of job losses and public health crisis.
We are hoping to raise 2,40,000 INR to be able to pay our employee’s salary of 20,000 INR per month for the next one year.
