Puttur is a Municipal city area of Dakshina Kannada district of Karnataka State. Having a dense population of over a lakh people in the town itself, the taluk is home to more than 2.5 lakh people which is soon going to be a district headquarters. A great threat which needs to be addressed in this developing town is that of disposing of waste.

To manage this we rotary team has come with a sustainable solution to waste management. At present,  Municipality is collecting waste from each house on daily basis with the use of 15 vehicles and is manually separating it in the dumping yard. 

Wet waste is used as compost whereas dry waste is dumped without management. It becomes a challenge to the urban local body and to the civilians of Puttur. If it continued the Municipality should find another 10 acres of land to dump the waste. It will tend to waste the tax revenue of the municipality and it deeply abrupt the community development activities of the Municipality.
Present Scenario 
The current dump yard is in Bannur which is spread over 7.5 acres of land. It has tons of legacy waste which have not only disturbed the harmony of the surrounding areas but are also causing serious health risks to the residents there. Fresh waste to the tune of 7 to 8 tons is collected on a daily basis and this if not addressed will add to the already piled up legacy waste.


To curb this issue and to have a sustainable solution to waste management, Rotary Puttur East Swaccha Bharat Trust was formed under the leadership of a visionary Rtn Krishna Narayana Muliya. Rotary Club of Puttur East which was Chartered by a very seasoned Rotarian, K.R.Shenoy in the year 1988 has grown tremendously contributing to the growth of this town of Puttur. As Rotary Club Puttur East is leading community activities in the city, aimed to a sustainable solution to this waste management project.
Concept Plan
In the first phase, we were successful in creating awareness in public, the result of which we are receiving waste that is segregated from the households. An MOU has already been signed with the City Municipal Council, for collection & transporting the waste from the households, further segregation at the dumping point, to keep the waste ready for the process of bio methanisation or plasma gasification. Generating compressed biogas from wet waste and plasma gas from all other waste including plastics a dream which will cost us 9 to 10 crores can be a reality only with your support.  
For the smooth functioning of this long-run activity, we formed a separate trust named Rotary Club Puttur East Swachabharath Trust. Senior Members, past district officers, current President, and current Secretary are the board members.

Wet Waste Management

Raw Materials - Food waste, vegetable waste, weed cuttings, sewage waste etc.
Capacity – 20 Tons per day. Project cost – Rs 4.5 Crores.
The compressed biogas plant will work through Digester and purify by modern technology. The gas can be used in Automobiles, Hotels, or even by Oil companies through SAATA scheme. The by-product slurry also finds applications.

Dry Waste Management

Raw Materials - All Dry waste including sanitary waste, which is entirely dumped entirely can be converted through Plasma Gasification technology. The gas has commercial application.
