My name is Nepal Singh. I come from a small town called Karoli in Rajasthan. I lost my parents when I was a child and know what it feels like to live without any guarantee of food and roof on a daily basis.
I work as a care taker of pet dogs and have been rescuing injured, sick and abandoned animals for the last 10 years. I have rented a small piece of land of 3100 sq ft and keep these animals there. I have been my only constant along with a helper (Sonu) since this journey began. On the way, some people joined me. Some of them stayed, some left.
I don’t understand marketing or running online groups but some young volunteers help me run these social media groups. We still don’t get enough donation to carry on this operation. After everything we receive, I still end up spending from my own pocket and am not left with much for my own expenditure. These animals are my life but I’m losing hope.
We get non stop calls for rescues and i just don’t have the heart to say no. We don’t have an ambulance and i have to spend on fuel to travel to remote areas to pick up these animals. Sometimes people offer to help with pick up but most times its just me. A lot of people report cases and I’m extremely thankful to them for brining it into my notice but not enough people donate. Everyday i handle 7-8 accident cases. Some so horrible that my soul shudders. I’m losing hope and starting to give up. The summer is brutal in Rajasthan and now I’m worried about air cooling.
My mental health is not in a good place. We need funds for food, medicines, rent, electricity. I want to build a small operation theatre at the shelter so that we don’t have to treat the animals on the cold (or burning hot), hard floor while they lay there bleeding, covered in muck. I wish to buy a second hand ambulance.
There are more than 50,000 stray dogs in Jaipur. My dream is that not a single animal goes abandoned, hungry and thirsty on the streets. I want to start a bi-weekly spaying/neutering and vaccination program. I want to start adoption pick up services and free clinic services via social media, posters in neighbourhood hotspots, and networking with schools and places of worship, restaurants, and other businesses. I also want to have a website where every donor can see the day-to-day updates of the shelter so that they can be sure that there money is indeed being used for the right purpose.
I have many dreams, but not a single one for myself. Help me. Help me help these voiceless beings who for no fault of theirs, continue to suffer.
