It is overwhelmingly great to see the support of celebrities and common man in India and abroad to help in the PM CARES (Prime Minister’s Citizen Assistance and Relief in Emergency Situation Fund). Our team endorses the fundraiser for such a great cause and our teams have contributed in their own capacity to these funds.
At the same time, our team have been working on ground for the past two weeks for various causes related to alleviating the impact of corona virus. In the Gujarat state, we have witnessed the impact of corona virus on hourly wage workforce. Hunger and sanitation are two biggest issues we noticed among our fellow citizens living in extremely unhygienic and remote places of the major cities of Gujarat state. We worked side-by-side with local police to distribute groceries and feed the stranded migrant workers but it was not enough to make an impact on even 50% of the needy. We estimate that about 200,000 (2 Lakh) people in the area of Gandhinagar, Mehsana and some areas of Ahmedabad are in the urgent need of basic groceries such as lentil and rice.
That being said, we have full trust in the macro-economy measures taken by the government. Our efforts are going to reach directly to the vulnerable population in the matter of hours from your contribution. In fact, we are also trying to reach the local and central government to offer our on-ground support.
A large majority of the middle class and upper class in Gujarat have stock of grocery items sufficient for about six months as it is common practice in Gujarat to buy commonly used groceries for a year. However, the daily wage workers and poor as well as below poverty line families buy groceries daily or weekly based on the money they make every day. An estimated 40-60% of these families do not have a ration card which is essential to avail government aid.
We have identified grocery suppliers in the north Gujarat area who are willing to provide us grocery at a discounted rates. We have trained local volunteers to prepare emergency kits with a week of supplies. These kits include-5kg Wheat flour, 4 kg Rice, 1 Kg Dal and oil in the congested areas such as slums. With our enthusiastic and self-less team of volunteers, we intend to reach at least 70% of the 200,000.
We have discounted rates of grocery items from generous local grocery stores in the north Gujarat. A total of INR 400 would be sufficient to support a family of four with these supplies. In the first phase, we are planning to prepare 5000 kits. Our teams can prepare these kits in less than a week and distribute it to beneficiary at the earliest. We need a total of INR 20 Lakh to support these efforts.
We reckon that your generous USD 5-6 (INR 400) would support one family through this crisis. Please support in your capacity.
