Located at the heart of LR Nagar- a peri-urban slum, Greenland Public School (GPS), a private school, has been the ray of hope for children to receive quality and holistic education. With the guidance of educational organizations with curriculum design and teacher training, the school has been successfully imparting education while providing employment to women stricken by financial stress. Today, GPS has an uncertain future to face, for which it would require the support of the collective. Ever since the first lockdown implemented in response to the outbreak of the coronavirus, the school has been bearing the cost of paying salaries to teachers and maintaining the school building while not collecting fees from the learners. Requesting fees from the parents at such a time would only lead to further stress as the parents in this community tackle the hardships of unemployment, poor mental and physical health, isolation, and domestic violence. A majority of the parents are daily wage workers and live from hand to mouth. The members of the community are barely managing to make ends meet with most houses having an ailing family member, electricity, and water connections being cut after the inability of paying bills and with no ration. In such circumstances, students are shouldering the responsibility of making ends meet by succumbing to child labor and child marriage. If the stress of paying or school fees is upon them, there would be a large number of students looking for other sources of income to pay the price of education. The students in the school are those with potential, sincere, with genuine interest to learn. With your collective support, we would be able to sustain the school for the next academic year. This amount would allow us to provide quality instruction and a conducive environment for the students to learn in. We have committed and sincere staff who are determined to provide learners with education to help them overcome their challenges and sustain their homes.
