    Girl Child Education in India

    from Mumbai, Maharashtra

Objective: Piyush and I are getting married. And we believe that during such happy occasions, it is incumbent upon us to share our joys with those less fortunate and address a pertinent social challenge. Hence, we are strictly not accepting any gifts for our wedding. Instead, should you wish to share a token of your love for our union, we welcome your support for Girl Child Education in India.

Problem: India is still far from achieving gender equality. Given the prevailing influence of patriarchal values, right from their birth, a lot many girls bear the brunt of gender inequality and gender stereotypes. No matter how talented and ambitious she is, the girl child often receives the shorter end of the stick, with families not willing to invest as much in her education, as compared to her male sibling. Recent national data reveals that the dropout rate for girls is 16.88% at the secondary level, with the figures being substantially higher for girls from vulnerable groups. Some of the main reasons which act as barriers for girl child education are poverty, gender bias, gender-based violence, amongst others. Only one in every three girls in India completes school education age-appropriately.

Solution: To educate girls is to lead the way to prosperity. It is one of the best ways to reduce inequalities and build communities. When we educate girls we also take a step towards reducing poverty, transforming lives for the better, and shaping society towards progress. When a girl is educated, she is empowered. She can make decisions for herself, raise the standard of living for her family and children, generate more employment options and reform the society as a whole. Therefore, investing in girl child education in India is the need of the hour.

Process: We will be making grants from this fund to cover annual academic expenses of girl children. We will be doing so after thoroughly evaluating recipient organizations, so that your valuable resources can reach the last mile. We will be posting a summary of the allocations once we have completed the process in the coming months.

How could you be a part of this change: Your generous contributions will help educate girl children and enable them to stay in school for a better tomorrow. It will act as a catalyst for these young girls to be self-reliant and lead the way forward for nation-building. As it is said, "If not you, then who? If not now, then when?" The time to act is indeed now.
