    This fundraiser will benefit

Meghna and more underprivileged kids in need of spectacles

    from Bengaluru (Bangalore) Urban, Karnataka

Any additional money above 1Lakh INR will be used to further this initiative to other schools.

Meet Meghna. She is currently in 5th Grade. But this might be her last school year. She is from one of the many marginalized communities in Bangalore. Her father is a daily wager and mother works as a house maid. She is a first generation learner. Due to the financial constraints, her parents can only afford to send her to a low budget school where the fee is less than 250 INR (3.50USD)  per month and cannot further come up with the cost of the absolutely necessary spectacles.

Imagine your whole future being stolen from you because you cannot go to school anymore. This is sadly the story of Meghna and hundreds of her school friends. They get robbed of a better future because they cannot afford glasses.

Meghna along with 51 other students from underprivileged communities have been identified for a necessary requirement of spectacles due to an uncorrected refractive error eye problem by the Stronger Schools Project. Without the spectacles, they are struggling to keep up with the school topics. They cannot properly read the whiteboard or do their homework. What might seem like a small problem to be fixed to most of us, it is the harsh reality of school children such as Meghna.

You can save a child’s future with a small amount of just 1000INR (14 USD). What are 1000INR (14USD) compared to the whole future of a child?

Stronger Schools Project
The Project aims to empower facilitators for organic and holistic school transformation by making our school leaders effective. Since the past one year, the Stronger Schools Project  (Co-lead by Global Shapers Prasanth Nori & Neeraj Doddamane) has been supported by the Global Shapers community, Bangalore hub. The Library Transformation and Eye Test Drives are great examples of how to elevate the local community, especially children to make them achieve their full potential in life.

About the Eye Test Drive
Global Shapers Bangalore hub in collaboration with the LV Prasad Eye Institute (LVPEI) launched eye test drives that aim to test thousands of school children for uncorrected refractive error eye problems in multiple schools in and around Bangalore.
The pilot drive was conducted with 5 schools across our network and we will scale this further after successfully managing the funding for the affected children.
By partnering with LVPEI on community & outreach initiatives, we look forward to taking their affordable folding phoropter device to the benefit of the community and positively impact the lives of many in our joint quest to “Democratise Clear Vision” (see video).

Eye Test Drive Details
The pilot drive was successfully conducted with 1455 school children which were tested with the help of LVPEI and Sankara Hospital Eye camp. The tests included: 1. Vision Assessment, 2. Refraction, 3. Subjective Assessment, 4. Anterior Segment Evaluation and 5. Fundus Examination.
The total number of the prescription given for consultation is 20 and the total number of required spectacles is 52.

The total cost for one spectacle (including maintenance) is coming out to be around 1000INR (14USD).
Furthermore, we calculate an additional cost of 26 spectacles to be able to replace some children’s glasses over time.
Total cost (including the taxes, operational and platform charges) is coming to 100000INR/ 1436USD [52*1000INR + 26*1000INR+ 7000INR(Operational charges)+15000INR(Further consultation fees for a few special cases) ].

How Can You Help?
  • You can give wings to the dreams of Meghna and the other affected school children for their dream of a good education. As little as your today’s lunch money can be a big contribution to the campaign.
  • You can also help us connect with corporates and organizations who can support the funding in future or provide the project with the spectacles.
  • You can spread the word in your circle, among your friends, family, and colleagues.

A small act of kindness from you will go a long way in empowering these underprivileged children to dream big and give them hope, hope for a better world.

Any additional money above 1Lakh INR will be used to further this initiative to other schools.
