We come with an urgent appeal for help for the medical treatment required by 1 year 5 months old Fathima who was surrendered for adoption and is being looked after at the Shishu Mandir Children’s Home, Bangalore, India. Fathima was born in May 2020 and has had such a difficult start in life. Her mother decided to surrender her for adoption, when she was about 2 months old and Fathima came to the Shishu Home on 7th July 2020. But a month later, her mother claimed the child back. However, in January this year, she returned with Fathima to us saying she was unable to manage her life with the baby.
A few months after Fathima returned to us, our staff realised that Fathima was not reacting to loud noises. She was taken to Manipal Hospital and also to Chandhrashekar’s Institute for Speech and Hearing. Various tests proved that Fathima is completely deaf.
 
In order to restore some hearing capacity, she needs a cochlear implant. The cost of the instrument to be implanted in both ears is exorbitant and it brings the total cost of the procedure to Rs 38.4 lakh. This amount is prohibitive for us, and we will not be able to raise it without the support of friends of Shishu Mandir.
The operation will change life for Fathima completely, allow her the opportunity to be educated and make a life for herself. It will also improve her chances to find an adoptive family, as it does not demand a cost which many prospective families will be able to bear.
