Visakhapatnam (or Vizag) is a port city in Andhra Pradesh and is often known as "The Jewel of the East Coast". It is located on the southeast coast of Bay of Bengal and is surrounded by the Eastern Ghats on the north and the west. It is spread over an area of 550 sq km and is the second largest city of Andhra Pradesh.

Most families are illiterate, Illiteracy means being unable to read, write or sign their own name, unable to read streets signs while traveling, and even unable to know their children activities, even unable to calculate change in the marketplace. 

Options for work are limited—mostly , end-up as manual labor—and dishonest employers cheat on money because they are inability to calculate.Visakhapatnam Industrial belt has a good mountain range. Village dwellers in search of employment mainly laborers have occupied these mountains.

Many become victims of alcohol and money launderers. The women and children suffer for reasons - mainly lack of literacy.

Through a year long class:

Adult Literacy programs are carried out for around 100-200 adults each year. Young-adults becoming literate, and are exposed to a world of educational opportunities, they can take steps towards the vocational goals to which they aspire.

Students not only gain literacy abilities—they also learn about hygiene, good nutrition, and gain practical business skills!
Men and women are brought from zero literacy knowledge to a 5th grade level of reading, writing, and math.
