Efterskole Welfare Society is a residential school for girls who could not pass their 10th class examinations. This initiative was started by Lissi Braae 8 years ago in Phyang, Ladakh. This project was started because girls were often married at a younger age if they were not able to continue their education. This project gives a second chance to girls who require additional support to achieve their dreams as they belong to low socioeconomic backgrounds living in remote parts of Ladakh.
Every year we take 20 girls from remote parts of Ladakh and give them free stay and tuition. In the past 8 years, our average pass percentage for students who clear the examination has been 80%. In the batch of 2019, all the girls passed with flying colours. We have been training girls in various activities like tailoring, spoken English, dance, basics of computer and gardening etc. During weekends we also organise classes for personality development and career counselling. We also often organise talks from people who are pioneers in their field and take the children for field trips to places of importance in and around Leh.
Some of our notable alumni are - Jigmet Dolma (Elite Category Marathon Runner) and Tsewang Chorol (Member of Indian Ice Hockey Team).
As we are a private institution, we rely on donations from individuals/organisations that are willing to help. We are currently looking for more people to join our cause and donate to help the school move forward. Your contribution can help a girl stay in school.
The funds would be used for:
1. Buying sports equipment
2. Setting up a library
3. Classroom up-gradation
4. Construction of insulated classrooms
5. Tuition fees and lodging expenses of students
6. Organising workshops and field trips.
You may follow the developments through our social media.
