The Covid Pandemic and lockdown has impacted the poor and marginalised the most. In cities like Delhi, informal workers and slum dwellers have been hit hardest by the lockdown in 2020 and 2021. Most of the informal workers have lost their jobs in the lockdown. This has generated a massive crisis of food and livelihood for them. We all have seen the massive migrant workers crisis that erupted after the first phase of lockdown in 2020.
In an attempt to ensure food security for the slum dwellers, residents of Dhobighat in Delhi’s Batla House area, orgnanised under the banner of AICCTU, have taken up the initiative of starting Jhuggi Community Kitchen.  AICCTU is a recognised central Trade Union engaged in organising lakhs of workers throughout the country. The Dhobighat slum was demolished without any notice in September,2020. This rendered around 100 households homeless. But the slum dwellers did not give up their right to decent housing. They have formed the Dhobighat Jhuggi Adhikar Manch to continue their fight for housing . Starting the Jhuggi Community Kitchen is a step forward in their battle for right to food and decent livelihood.
The student-youth community and generous people of Batla House have come forward to support the initiative of Jhuggi Community Kitchen. The kitchen has started from 18th June and every day around 300 meals are being served to slum residents in Batla House area. The beneficiary of the kitchen are not only residents of Dhobighat but also of adjacent slums. The joint initiative of the Jhuggi kitchen started by AICCTU-AISA-RYA has generated enthusiasm and participation by residents of the slums in the area.
The estimate is as following:-
