On February 27th 2016, Deep then aged two n half was admitted to Belgaum Children Hospital for high fever. The subsequent day ie 28th Feb, he had a stroke & slipped into coma for 5 days. Post this incident, life has never been the same for little Deep & his parents....
In March 2016, his parents consulted Pediatric Neurologist, Dr. Mahesh Kamate in Belgaum. CT scan was carried out & reports revealed that Deep had Acute Necrotizing Encephalitis (a disease characterized by respiratory or gastrointestinal infection and high fever accompanying with rapid alteration of consciousness and seizures). This meant that Deep would never be able to sit, walk or do anything on his own. He almost lost his vision too & since then is totally dependent on his Parents.
Deep is the only son of Shubhangi & Avaduth Parab. They come from a simple middle class family residing in Belgaum. Avaduth Parab is the sole bread earner for his family & works as a Medical Transcriptionist. Their agony & struggle with Deep’s health had just started…...
Deep was taken to many doctors & hospitals in Belgaum & Mumbai. The treatment went on for around 2 years. But Deep's condition did not improve much....he still couldn't sit on his own.
Deep's parents even consulted Dr.Udani, a world renowned Pediatric Neurologist from Mumbai. He too like several other physicians suggested aggressive physical therapy as there would be higher chances of Deep getting back to normal.
In order to get good Physio therapy, his parents have relentlessly tried lots of options within Belgaum & around. Unfortunately the results were not very satisfying. In this process they have dedicated their entire time for Deep’s recovery & spent all their savings they had. So much so that Deep’s father had to continue his medical transcription work from home.
Fortunately, a well wisher of Deep's parents suggested them to consult ‘Core Concepts’ in Bavdhan Pune. Deep's parents were given to understand that many cases like Deep's were successful at this Center. Without wasting any time, Deep's parents decided to take him to Pune in the beginning of 2018.
After few sessions at Core Concepts Pune, Deep showed signs of improvement. He started to balance over a stool, all by himself for few minutes. Things which were not possible for Deep in 2 years at Belgaum, started to happen in just one month of treatment at Pune.
Deep’s treatment at Core Concepts was a costly affair. Deep’s prolonged treatment had terrible financial impact for his parents. Deep’s parents managed to stay at their friend's apartment in Pune. However after 2 monhts of stay in Pune they exhausted their funds & also had to vacate the apartment. With no other choice & with a heavy heart, they had to return back to Belgaum inspite of Deep’s incredible recovery. At this stage, little Deep was able to stand in his orthotics with support also sit on a chair all by himself.
The charges for therapy in Core Concepts were Rs.500 per session (1 & half hr). Everyday Deep had to undergo 2 sessions, which was Rs.1000 per day. Apart from this his parents had to manage their stay in Pune, food expenses, travel, medicine costs & other day today expenses.
For the past 6 months due to financial constraints deep’s treatment has slowed down. His condition after two plus years is back to square one.
As per Deep’s treating Doctor & other Neurologists that after 6 years of age it would be tough for his body to recover. Deep is now 5 years old, anything that needs to be done is now. Hence this is the reason Deep’s parents are thinking of going back to Pune & resume the treatment all over again…..until Deep recovers again…….until Deep walks again……….
Deep’s parents are currently devastated. As he cannot sit, his mother takes him to school & carries him for the entire day in the class. His parents are broken from within & to see their son who once was so cheerful & full of ife…..today cannot do anything on his own. However the ever smiling Deep is their only strength & motivation….Inspite of their struggle & financial crisis they are reluctant in seeking any kind of financial aid/help from outside.
But if Deep, doesn’t get the treatment now…..then he may not be able to lead a normal life ever again. Any donation, help or assistance can make a huge difference in Deep’s life.
