SOS: Emergency Oxygen and Medical Relief for Kolkata and West Bengal

The oxygen crisis for Covid patients has reached an alarming level of emergency and continues to rise daily.  400,000 new cases were reported in India on 30.4.21, while the actual numbers could be anywhere between 8-10 times more, due to a combination of under-reporting across India and lack of adequate testing.

We are already experiencing acute oxygen and medical shortages in Kolkata and the surrounding areas and this will only increase as all projections show that the peak of the wave has not been reached. The focus of major relief efforts and international funding is concentrated in other metropolitan cities such as Delhi, Mumbai and Bangalore and very little is reaching the Eastern belt of the country.
As concerned citizens, we have pooled in our resources and came together to address the situation. Seeing patients who could have been saved because they did not get oxygen or medicine on time is heartbreaking and cruel.

We have already successfully raised approximately 1 crore INR through the efforts of our committed Rotary team and our generous donors. These funds are being utilised for -
  1. Installing PSA O2 manufacturing units in 2 charitable hospitals identified for their commitment to serving the underprivileged sections of the society at nominal costs. We are in the processes of placing the final orders.
  2. Providing critical medical equipment to the charitable hospitals identified, like BI-Pap, ABG, HVNC machines etc.
But as we are speaking to the hospitals and the medical fraternity, the list of help they require keeps adding.

Presently each of the hospitals are using between an average of 100-120 jumbo O2 cylinders EVERY DAY. Even at the subsidised capped rate enforced by the government each cylinder refilling costs average of Rs. 300/- (including the cost of transportation to and fro from the factories) - which is a cost of Rs. 2.10 lacs INR EVERY WEEK for O2 re-filling.

This is difficult for the hospitals running on donations and charities to afford. We have started this fundraiser to help them raise money to pay for their O2 re-filling costs and also to purchase additional cylinders for them.
Please donate generously to help us help the hospitals and thereby the patients.

About us:
Rotary Club of Calcutta Metropolitan was incorporated as a registered trust in 1986. Over these years we have provided vision to the visually challenged, limbs to those physically challenged, provided communities with clean drinking water and sanitation facilities and educated the children from economically challenged backgrounds. Focussing on the girl child, we have ignited them with Gyan Jyoti by way of quality free education at our Pace Learning Centre and Barasat schools. Besides this, sustained tree plantation drives and the promotion of organic farming practices are some of our perennial projects to save the environment. In all, ₹ 100+ crore worth of projects have been implemented through our Matching and Global Grant projects. Our Club is also a proud 400% Paul Harris Fellow donor Club through our contributions to The Rotary Foundation!
