As the second wave of COVID-19 ravages India, the demand for medical infrastructure is under dire stress. This calls for immediate collective action to mobilize the creation of alternative health and recovery centres. A coalition of partners - Anant National University, Sustain Labs, Parliamentarians with Innovators for India, Saath Livelihood Services and Habitat for Humanity - is playing a crucial role in setting up these alternative COVID-19 recovery centres in different states across the country.

Since May 2020, our coalition of partners has made 13 COVID - 19 recovery centres across 5 states in India. We have also designed, manufactured, and put on the road in 2 states COVID oxygen response auto rickshaws and COVID testing auto rickshaws. We are partnering with the local governments in Punjab, Mumbai, Delhi and Gujarat to build new recovery centres now.

What are we doing?
The COVID - 19 recovery centres are situated in vacant buildings/ spaces identified by the local government, that are refurbished into temporary hospitals. Some examples of these are, government schools, marriage halls, community centres.

These recovery centres are equipped with cost-effective furniture made from corrugated board. This furniture including beds, bedside tables, and separators, is provided at each centre. The furniture is easy to transport, and quick to assemble. The corrugated board has a lamination film which makes it water-resistant and easy to disinfect. The cardboard separators allow patients isolation and dignity in large halls.

We have also partnered with various agencies to procure medical equipment such as oxygen concentrators, oximeters, ventilators to make the treatment available in different parts of the country as required.

Once the centre setup has been established, it is handed over to the local government body to manage. This centre will help healthcare workers provide necessary medical support to more patients and segregate between mild and moderate cases. The centres are linked to nearby hospitals with ICU facilities where patients can be transferred in case of emergencies.

What is the cost of setting up these recovery centres?
The recovery centre setup consists of furniture as well as medical equipment. The total cost for the project is  80,00,000 INR. This includes the cost for material, manufacturing, transportation, and assembly of furniture on site in different states. The rates of procurement are on the basis of bulk orders placed with our suppliers.
