I am Anushka, a Teach for India Fellow (Delhi Cohort). I, along with my co-fellows am teaching at Bab-Ul-Uloom, a low-income public School in Jafrabad. The school serves as an institution of knowledge for more than 150 students, who come from underprivileged families. The parents of most of our children are daily-wage earners, who cannot afford to send their kids to well equipped private schools. And hence, we at Bab-Ul-Uloom try our best to provide our students excellent education with all the logistics we have. As much as we want our kids to have the best of what they deserve, it is becoming difficult for us to arrange funds for the same.
For a child to grow and learn she or he not only need resources but also good and welcoming infrastructure. Currently, we have 7 classrooms for our students with only one bulb/tube-light and fan in each room. We have a separate space for Principal ma’am, in one of the classrooms separated through a curtain. The ceilings of the classrooms have cracks because of which leaks during the monsoon season. The school is filled with rainwater during monsoons, and in summers it is too humid for the children to sit closely with only one fan in the room.
The windows of all the classes are broken, and the toilets have poor sanitation. The students do not have access to the ground, and hence have limited space in the corridor to play, or to have sunlight and plants around them. Before the school re-opens and our kids are back, we would love to revamp the entire space for our children. We want the students to feel happy when they enter their newly painted classrooms, after more than a year of schools being shut.
We have hence collaborated with ‘Apni Maati’ who would be recreating the whole space by adding up-cycled toys and furniture to the school. We seek your support to help us create a fun-loving and beautiful space for our kids to learn. Following is the list of things we will be needing the funds for - paints, paintbrushes, waste containers, metal sheet, tarpon oil, plywood, plants, nails, screws, tyres, etc.
The unutilised amount will be used for establishing a mini-library for the students in the school, and for providing scholarship to students. Help our children get an excellent learning environment, for a good infrastructure is a basic need that every child has the right to. Below is the estimated amount for the logistics required -
Paints - 25000
Stationary - 10000
Painting tools - 3000
Electricity, plumbing, wall and ceiling repairing - 15000
Window grills - 20000
Whiteboards and projectors - 10000
Curtains - 2000
Waste tyres, containers, plywood, wood, iron rods, pipes, plants, tin cans, nails and screws, metal sheet, storage bucket, rope - 30000
Welding - 10000
Sanitation - 10000
the remaining amount will be utilized for buying books to set up a library and provide scholarship (paying for the fees and course books) to high achiever students.
