We make a living by what we get but we make a life by what we give
Seeing young children who should be at home holding a notebook and not a steel plate on the metro stations, struggling to make a living is truly heartbreaking.
My mother - Kumud Sharma, Nutan, and I, Megha, founded Enlightened Kumud Trust in Model Town, Delhi with a yearning to help and educate the underprivileged children and build hope for their future.
At Enlightened, the children belong to the absolute bottom of the pyramid, extremely economically and socially challenged backgrounds, barely managing food. We started by teaching them basic subjects and soft skills but soon realized that the problem is a much deeper one. We noticed many young girls (~13yrs) were married off because their parents couldn't afford to feed them.
At EKT, we started to focus on creating awareness among parents and their society as a whole. We helped them understand financial stability. We also created vocation-based income channels by teaching females lessons on stitching, henna designing, and other activities. A common roadblock to women’s education and their work was the severe lack of sanitary products. They substituted sanitary napkins for pieces of clothes, rugs, dried leaves, or sometimes nothing, making them prone to several infections and diseases. Hence, for them to succeed in education or income generation - their sanitary needs had to be addressed.
We believe in enabling children with practical and life-sustaining skills to help them break the cycle of poverty. We started with a batch of 20 students and are now a strong community of 100. As we scale to 100 kids, we need external support. At the moment, our existing supporters are suffering economically, emotionally, and financially.
We wish to collect funds to provide food kits for these kids, procuring educational supplies e.g. including books, furniture, and sanitary napkins for female students.
Please help with a small donation, one night of pizza might be someone’s monthly meal.
