Covid 19 has been a nightmare for the entire world, but for my family, it was more than just a nightmare. It took away my father. In April 2021 all 6 members of my family contrated the coronavirus despite taking every possible precautions. We washed our vegetables with a special liquid, we always wore masks and never removed it while we were out, washed and sanitized hands wherever required, but somehow one by one everyone got infected. 4 members needed to be hospitalized one after the other due to higher levels of infection and 2 having morbid issues. We followed all of doctor's prescriptions and suggestions but still the infection levels rose dramatically sending me, my mother, my sister and my father to the hospital. 3 of us recovered within 6-8 days and we're discharged, my father however was not so lucky. He got shifted into the ICU on the 2nd day itself and was put on the mask ventilator. The hospital did not have remedesvir and asked us to arrange the same. We had to arrange 7 vials for him, some even in black due to shortage all over the country ranging in between 3700 to 10000 a vial. Then the hospital asked us to arrange plasma since the remedesvir did not show much effect, which we also did, again out of pocket and costing 9000 each for 2 bags. Lastly, we were told to arrange bevacizumab or tocilizumab. We managed to do that as well after running around for 2 days straight and standing in queues for more than 6 hours each time. Finally we arranged the same for 52000 for a 500mg dose. All this over and above the 6lacs of hospital bill and despite all this, they could not save my father and he succumbed to the pain after fighting in the ICU for 15 days. The diagnosis for death was ARDS(Acute Respiratory Distress Syndrome) caused my covid. Now including my father and other family members, we have had to pay over 13 lacs in hospitals bills and external medication in the middle of lockdown, while our work has been shut for nearly 2 months now and no income coming in, and after borrowing from every possible solution and even mortgaging all our gold. We don't know how we will come out of this and how things will ever go back normal.
We can't bring our family member back and that sorrow haunts us, but knowing that soon situation can get even worse financially due to lockdown and government regulations, keeps us up all night.
