Amid the COVID-19 lockdown, groups of construction laborers are seen crowding in the corners of the streets with the hope of earning some money to feed their families. As scary as it sounds, when the Coronavirus pandemic has spread across the whole nation, such is the dreadful reality in Labour Chowk, Noida. Those people are aware of this lethal virus, yet they are forced to risk their lives to stamp out the burn in their stomachs. Yes! Such is the pain of hunger!
We are blessed to stay at home during this nationwide lockdown but what about those who have a home but cannot return to? What about those little children who are starving for days? When we are satisfyingly filling our stomach with good food, there are hundreds of people dying of hunger in our country. How can we sit with our arms crossed in dire situations like this? We know that govt. is doing its part to help but unfortunately, it is not reaching out to every corner of the nation. Corners where people are starving, corners where people are homeless, corners where people are dying!
We are losing people on a huge scale, every day, not just due to the Coronavirus, but also due to the implications of the lockdown on the poor. We fear that the ‘hunger pandemic’ might end up taking a lot more lives than the COVID-19. Migrant laborers have died on their way home after traveling hundreds of kilometers on foot without food. With nothing to eat, no proper shelter or sanitation, these people are dying of hunger every single day.
We, at Voice of Slum, have come forward to bring out a helping hand by reaching out to those who are in immediate need and/or are without valid documents. From providing one month’s ration to 2000 families, we are presently feeding 4000 families every day after receiving due permission from the Noida authorities. Strict adherence is also ensured according to the govt. norms specified during this lockdown while providing our aid. But we have been largely outnumbered in finances as well as other resources to fulfill our mission. We have to step out of our homes to feed these people, for they are a part of our family, and if we don’t take action now, then these homeless helpless people will die of poverty and hunger. We need your help - With folded hands of humility, we request you to join and support us in this much-needed endeavor. Let us keep all our differences aside and join hands to help these needy people in this hour of need. While the whole world is fighting against this deadly disease, let us also unite and do our part so that people don’t die out of hunger. This is the biggest test of humanity; let us not fail to be humans!
