I am Chahat Suri, an aspiring cancer researcher. I received an unconditional offer to study for a postgraduate degree in Molecular Biotechnology from the prestigious Anhalt University of Applied Sciences, Köthen, Germany. I received my offer in October 2020. And since then, I have not been able to fly to the university because of multiple hurdles, the major one being finances.
I hail from Delhi. And when I entered my teens years, my family faced a huge financial crash. We lost our business, our house, and all of our assets. It was a really challenging phase of our lives. I have seen my family breakdown with each passing day. Lack of money really does that to you.
However, none of that could ever phase down my love for medicine. I was always one of those kids that had their aim as clear as possible in their heads. It was either Doctor or nothing. I kept studying hard for taking biology in my high school and subsequently pass NEET. Unfortunately, after trying three consecutive times, including once without telling my parents, I was forced to give up (you can only appear in the exam thrice). But the dream of being a doctor pertained.
I joined NIIT University under a 75% scholarship and did my bachelor's in Biotechnology. Since the first year, I started working with multiple professors and grabbed every opportunity there was to get hands-on research experience. While in my third year, I started working under Dr. Kamna Srivastava, an Assistant Professor at the Ambedkar Centre of Biomedical Sciences, Delhi University. My work was based on Coronary Artery Disease and how people were more prone to it genetically.
After college was over, I had to support my family, and since there wasn't much scope or money in the field of Biotechnology in India (there's still not much scope), I had to part ways from the thing that made me the happiest - medicine and research. After working for three years now, I'm still serving one of the IT firms as a marketer (a skill I learned along the way). Moreover, I started selling my artworks on another platform to aid the family of four even more.
Continuing my master's is the only way to pursue my dreams and actually contribute to medicine. Since my parents could not help me with any education loans, and neither did other student services, I was forced to take personal loans. At the moment, I have three personal loans going on from different banks and am afraid that the amount is still not enough. I still need around 3 lacs to fulfill the requirement of 10332 Euros (approx 9.5 lacs) for the blocked account, which is a mandated requirement for the German visa. After including all of my savings, there's still a huge amount left for me to cover. I will not be able to make this dream a reality without the help of your contributions. No matter how small the amount, your support will ensure a future for me, which I'd be eternally grateful for.
