    Ceremony of Longing

    from Bengaluru, Karnataka

Story

Ceremony of Longing is a performative ceremony choreographed by Diya Naidu and devised with dancers Akshata Joshi, Sruthi, Seher Noor Mehra, Snigdha Prabhakar, Maitreyee Joshi, Paridhi Bihani, Anagha Kasyap and Deepthi Bhaskar. They began the work in 2020 during the pandemic - between the first and second wave, and premiered in 2022.
The research began in the context of working through the anxiety and dystopia of the pandemic by processing it through conversations and embodied tools. Our process revealed to us that the power of our longing and desire is indeed essential at this time. Many wise ones in our community talked about this being a portal - a moment for us to collectively redeem ourselves and redirect our futures.
When we looked at what was alive we found much grief, shame, guilt and historical weight.

If we cannot even see what we long for, how can we name it? And if we do not name it, how can we manifest a sustainable future together? It took some hard work and psycho-physical investigation to be able to see or sense the longing.
This piece is an extremely essentialized form of the process, it is what we hope to offer to our witnesses.
Through this campaign, we are trying to raise funds for the resources that will make the project possible. We need the commitment of dancers, a studio to work in, fees for our collaborators, a performance venue, technical support (lighting/sound), and other costs. We intend to use the funds to perform for various audiences, travel to diverse communities and be able to remunerate the artists involved in the project with a  professional fee.
The work requires not just the skills we have acquired as trained dancers but also training the voice, the emotional self and the stamina to sustain carrying the stories that come to us from our audiences.
We see the artist as key, in the integration of worlds and through this project really hope to listen to what is needed. We believe in doing work that transforms both the artist and the witness, creating a safe environment while really listening.

We are grateful for any support we receive and appreciate the goodwill of our patrons. This work has been our attempt to transform what is heavy into a gentle yet real moment of seeing - it is our offering to the people who send in their stories and our communities.

So far, the production has been self-funded. We are in great need of more funds to continue the work. We received testimonials from the audience telling us how impactful the performance was and the healing/therapeutic nature of the experience. We want to create more such experiences and only with your help will we be able to do it.
