Lalitha Chandana Foundation was founded in memory of Lalitha and Chandana, the mother and the daughter, who fought cancer with courage and conviction till they lost their lives to the ruthless disease in 2012 and 2013, respectively. Lalitha was an anthropologist by training and profession and worked tirelessly on women's issues and gender equality. She strongly believed that the under-served population and the local organizations are highly capable and that their resilience is deep rooted. Chandana, who unfortunately played both the roles of a care provider to her mom and a patient right after her mom passed away, believed that learning about early diagnosis and empathetic support to the family at the time of shock and anxiety when diagnosed with cancer is fundamental in dealing with cancer. Embracing the mother's principles and the daughter's ideas as our very own we, family and friends, registered LCF in Dec 2014 with a mission statement to "nurture a sense of comfort among the people diagnosed with cancer by educating on treatment protocol and available services, sponsor cancer treatments, and spread awareness for early diagnosis.”
Over the years we found great partnership in Institute of Rural Health Studies (IRHS) and other local organizations and sponsored events in creating awareness and sponsoring specific needs for Cancer patients. In 2020 our efforts had to slow down due to the Covid-19 pandemic; this set us back in our yearly efforts, and we took the opportunity to think about our approach. Our deliberation and determination led to a new partnership with Kid Power India in 2021 that enabled us to establish a boots-on-the-ground approach towards our mission. With the guidance and experience of Kid Power India and a local employee, in 2021, we were able to support multiple cancer awareness sessions in Bhimli Mandal, a suburban in Vishakapatnam, India. Through these sessions, many local and under-served participants, learnt about the benefits of early diagnosis, got a chance to do Q & A with medical professionals, and our follow up efforts led to references for screening/diagnosis and treatment. We are inspired by the work so far and the impact we are making. In 2022, we plan to initiate efforts in rural areas as we believe that the lack of awareness of early diagnosis and treatment options impacts the rural population much more.
We are confident that we are bringing this organization a step closer in its mission and that there is a lot more work to be done ahead of us. We would love for you to join hands in our effort by helping us meet our goal to raise 300K INR in funds to support our cause. Our fund raising is open till May 15, 2022(marks the anniversary Chandana passing away).
