With generous support from many of you, we have raised. ₹ 11.4 lakhs as of September 26th morning. We now need a final push from you to reach the target of ₹ 20 lakhs before the end of the month.
This is a fundraiser I am launching on the eve of my birthday on September 28th to raise funds for the construction of a Cancer Hospital being set up by the NGO Udhavum Ullangal in the city of Tirunelveli in Southern Tamil Nadu, India
About Us :
Udhavum Ullangal means “Helping Souls” in Tamil. It is a registered public charitable trust setup in 2000 to help people in distress, poverty and during crisis. The key focus areas are education and healthcare. The healthcare activities of Udhavum Ullangal are primarily targeted towards cancer care and awareness in Tirunelveli district in Tamil Nadu, a historic town and headquarters for Tirunelvelli district having a population of over 30 lakhs.
South Tamilnadu comprising of Kanyakumari, Thoothukudi & Tirunelveli districts with a population of 81 lakhs, has the 2nd highest Cancer Incidence Rate in the state. The healthcare infrastructure in this region is inadequate to support the population. There are no cancer care hospitals in this district. People in the district are dependent on Madurai or Chennai for their healthcare needs. There is only 1 hospital bed per 1000 people, 1 doctor and 2 nurses for 10000 people. The entire healthcare infrastructure hinges around the government medical college and hospital in Tirunelvelli.
What We Do :
Alarmed by the burgeoning incidence of cancer rural areas, Udhavum Ullangal started conducting cancer awareness and screening programs in association with the Cancer Institute (WIA) Chennai. We have till date treated and cured more than 1000 persons with cancer, screened nearly 50 thousand persons and provided cancer awareness to over 1.5 lakh persons by conducting 1500+ cancer awareness camps. We also provide mobile palliative care for terminally ill persons referred by the Govt Health Dept.
Our Vision & Mission
Our vision is to enable every person with cancer to live a longer, healthier and fuller life.
We will setup not for profit specialty cancer care facilities in rural areas to provide affordable holistic cancer care to everyone.
Our first step is to setup a cancer day care hospital offering cancer care diagnostics and treatment to out patients and by partnering with local hospitals for in patient care and treatment with our own team of qualified doctors and nurses.
The total outlay for this project is ₹ 18 crores. We seek the support of philanthropists to help us attain this goal.
