Animal Warriors Conservation Society (AWCS) is making a difference by rescuing and providing
rehabilitation to the injured birds in Hyderabad to let them fly high again. AWCS`s vision is to
ensure injury free birds in Hyderabad. Our city and its lakes are home to several migratory birds
and we can easily spot species like Yellow Capped Woodpecker, Red Avadavat, Common
Kingfisher right here in Hyderabad. At AWCS we believe it's our duty to ensure the safety of
birds. We strive to take proper care with love here at our Bird Rehabilitation Center, Hyderabad.

For decades, Hyderabad’s many lakes have been popular destinations for winter migratory birds
from Europe and Central Asia. They are usually seen in large numbers especially in Ameenpur
lake which is among the lakes declared as Biodiversity Heritage Site by the Union Government
in 2016, Osmansagar and Himayatsagar. With so many lakes in Hyderabad, they host over 400 plus bird species and hence its
important to support when they get injured.
AWCS aims to address the following key challenges:
1. Birds get entangled with discarded synthetic manjha/ nylon thread while kite flying.
These synthetic non-biodegradable thread coated with glass or other harmful
substances when entangled leads to severe wounds, nerve injuries, mutilation of wings
or death in many cases. Other threats are from the discarded plastics in lakes and other
2. Lack of a dedicated facility for rehabilitation of injured or sick birds.
With the increase in the injury cases of birds, AWCS realised the immediate need for a
dedicated Bird Rehabilitation Center where these birds can be rescued when injured or sick,
treated in a timely manner and released happily.

How does AWCS address the key challenges? We follow the RRR model i.e
Rescue - Rehab -Release.
When an injured, exhausted or a sick bird is rescued, it is brought into the Bird Rehabilitation
Center by our rescue volunteer/ staff.
2. Rehab
The bird will be first examined by a veterinarian and shall be treated accordingly. Post treatment
it is sent to a recovery unit in our facility. In case the bird is critically injured or sick then it shall
be kept in the Intensive Care Unit (ICU) and monitored. If the bird is infected with any
contagious disease then it is quarantined until fully recovered.
3. Release
The birds which recovered are sent to the Pre-Release unit to test their flight before releasing
them into the wild. On complete recovery it will be released back to its territory happily.
We strongly believe that sensitisation of communities towards the hazards of Manjha will reduce
its usage. Having a dedicated Bird Rehabilitation Center can help save birds which are injured
and also reduce the mortality rate of birds stuck in Manjha. Regular Clean-up drives can help
retrieve manjha from nature which can prevent the birds from entangling. Awareness among the
vendors about the hazards of manjha and creating awareness about the laws related to the ban
on Synthetic/Glass-coated manja can significantly reduce the illegal sales. By engaging school
children in bird walks and other activities related to Nature camp can bring a positive impact in
Avian conservation by the next generation. This will help in building an eco-friendly and
co-existence society.
By supporting us in building the Bird Rehabilitation Center and providing a safe space for the
injured or sick birds to get treated and recovered, you are investing in the future of Hyderabad.
We believe that happy and healthy birds contribute to the overall well-being of the environment
and also help in maintaining an ecological balance. By focusing on this rehabilitation center and
spreading awareness, we hope to end the hardships faced by the birds and provide a brighter
future for not only these birds, but for many more to come here.
With the said amount, we shall utilize it completely towards constructing the shelter required in
the Bird Rehabilitation Center in Hyderabad. The shelter consists of the following units i.e
Intensive care unit (ICU), Orphaned care unit, Recovery unit, Pre-release unit, Clinic room,
Office room, Kitchen, Storage and Toilets. Once this shelter is built, it shall create a ripple effect
in supporting 1000s of birds to be rescued and treated over the coming years.
Let's come together to build this Bird Rehabilitation Center and protect our feathered friends!
