Story

Our NGO ICON is based out of WEST BENGAL and we are committed to impacting and improving lives for 6 years now. Our mission is to bring honor, justice, dignity and beauty to families by alleviating poverty. To take our objective a step further, we have begun a crowdfunding campaign to raise 5,00,000 for the Education & Training in our 5 slums area

From 2020 onwards, a number of children have dropped out during the prolonged COVID season. A vast majority of them are never returning to formal schools. Many of the children who attended government schools or small private schools are unable to cope up with studies because of the lack of online system for education. The responsibility of education has fallen upon mostly uneducated parents, who find it unable to help their wards. It’s been widely noted that parents have quit the hope of schooling for their children.

With the uncertainty that looms over the whole country, it is an obvious fact that these children search for jobs to provide for their families. Once they are employed as cleaners, sweepers, garbage collectors etc, it would be a herculean task to place them back in learning. In some ways we can say that they are stuck at the places. As of now, the focus of the government is mostly health and with the alarming rate of COVID infections, there is no space and the time to think about the declining number of schooled children. Gradually when the pandemic subsides, it will be too late to reintegrate children to formal schooling. While appropriately acknowledging the need to protect lives in the slums, we also foresee millions of children who would have lost their opportunity to study when the Pandemic waves recede from the country. So the best time to intervene is now. Learning is not necessarily schooling. If we can find means to educate these children, then reintegration to formal schools or enrollment for open schooling stands as wonderful opportunities for children.

So what shall we do?
Read our three objectives to continue providing education:

1.To establish Home-Schools for 500 dropped outs and unschooled children
2. Stop and prevent the disruption of learning (either because of COVID-19 and/or familial reasons) in class and at home through a rigorous intervention strategy.
3.Reintegrate slum children into a home-schooling system with an average attendance of 60% and reignite their interest in studies through selective counseling.
