Valli's first pregnancy went on seamlessly. She was overwhelmed with joy, enjoying her blooming belly but unexpectedly, life took a drastic turn. She lost her baby just 5 days after the birth. Her joy vanished, her family was devastated, and all the little things she had bought for her baby lay untouched. The next one year was a blur. After 5 long years, she became pregnant again, but fear took over her. Until her little baby was nestled in her arms, she did not believe that she was going to 'mother' a baby. When she began to believe that after every storm comes a rainbow, a sentiment that couldn't be truer for a mother welcoming an infant after experiencing loss, she realised that another storm lay ahead of her - one she never thought she would have to brave.

Valli’s baby girl is now battling for her life in the NICU and she needs your help to take her baby back home and live her dream of being a mother.

Valli's baby began to struggle for breath within a few hours of her birth

Despite the fear that engulfed her on every passing day, Valli followed all the instructions religiously and did everything possible to give birth to a healthy child. She and her husband Venkatesh were happy when they were told that it was a baby girl. They both breathed a sigh of relief on seeing their seemingly healthy baby. But to their shock, within a few hours, their baby fell short of breath and got white patches around her neck and stomach. The baby was diagnosed with sepsis, a severe infection in the blood that affects the body,  and Persistent Pulmonary Hypertension (PPHN), in which the blood is forced away from the lungs due to high blood pressure in the arteries that go to the lungs. This decreases the body’s supply of oxygen and causes breathing problems.

"I'm thinking of every possible thing that I could have done that would have changed the situation - I feel extremely guilty. I have the ultrasound scans of the baby that I lost, I used to see it every now and then and cry over the unbearable loss. I have been longing to hold a baby in my arms and feed her. Now I have a baby, but I don't know if I have to face the same fate again" says Valli.

Poor couple have no means to save their baby

Venkatesh is a daily wage laborer. He does construction work and earns Rs 500 per day. Having 3 square meals is itself a struggle for him, yet he managed to save a meager amount for his baby and now he has exhausted everything. It has been been 20 days since he went for work and has been borrowing money from his friends for the food and to buy medicines. He needs 2.5 lakhs to continue the treatment which is beyond his means.

"Sometimes even my wife thinks that I'm not 'sad enough' for all that has happened. But I'm hiding all my sorrows because if I break down, it is hard to comfort my wife. She needs me. I understand the pain she is going through, she has no strength for it. I long to see her happy again. She has so many dreams and all I want is to take our baby back home." - Venkatesh.
