    Baby Deeksha Ramesh Naik

    from Bangalore, Karnataka

As Kamala held Deeksha and leaned in closer to the cake to help her blow out the candle, she made a small wish herself – that her daughter continues to be happy, healthy and safe. Deeksha’s first birthday celebrations in October was a joyous one. Surrounded by balloons, decorations and a family that loves her, baby Deeksha was so excited that she kept Kamala and Ramesh on their toes the whole evening. Kamala couldn’t have been happier and felt grateful for all they had. However, what followed this happy occasion was devastating - baby Deeksha was diagnosed with eye cancer just a few days after her first birthday.

Baby Deeksha on her birthday

“I noticed a glassy tinge in her right eye, I knew that wasn’t normal. Everything else was fine with her, she didn’t have a fever or wasn’t feeling weak, but her eye… I never imagine that it would be cancer. She can lose her sight and life to this without treatment.” – Kamala, mother

Baby Deeksha is terrified of leaving the house

The trip to the hospital for Deeksha’s chemotherapy is a difficult one for the parents. As Ramesh carries Deeksha and walks out the door, her fear sets in. Kicking and screaming, Deeksha tries to pull away from him and go back inside. It’s the most painful sight for Kamala and Ramesh.

“She is scared all the time. Even when we took her to get her Aadhar card photo taken, she thought she was in the hospital and she screamed and cried the entire time. She thinks everything and everyone is going to cause her pain. It’s heartbreaking.” – Ramesh, father

With no regular work or income, the parents are struggling to afford the treatment

Deeksha is their only child. She is still learning to talk, but even the smallest word that she attempts to say is celebrated by her doting parents. She even started walking with support. Now they have nothing to celebrate. As Deeksha gets chemotherapy, sometimes crying her way through it, Kamala sits by her side, holding her hand telling her everything will be fine.

“But I know that there’s so much more we have to do. She needs to continue getting chemotherapy, but we don’t have the means to afford 8 lakhs. My husband hasn’t been able to go to work regularly for the past two months because of the hospital visits. He does whatever little work he gets, farming, laying stones…anything to get a little money.” – Kamala

Chemotherapy can save her from eye cancer

Ramesh’s income of Rs. 200-300 a day isn’t enough to afford Deeksha’s chemotherapy. Irregular, meagre income, emotional and physical exhaustion and the constant fear of losing their only child has left Ramesh and Kamala helpless. Deeksha can get better and fight eye cancer with chemotherapy, and she needs your help to do it. Your contribution can save baby Deeksha’s life.
