The epidemic of substance abuse in the young generation has assumed alarming dimensions in India, especially in Punjab. One estimate by BBC says that more than two-thirds of Punjab's households have at least one addict in the family. Lovepreet’s village has also been plagued by this.
In response to this, Lovepreet along with his team has established the Baba Bhagat Singh sports academy to help youth struggling with drug addiction through sports, the academy also keeps the youth in general engaged with sports and fitness.
Their team has thus far supported 45 youth formerly struggling from addiction and engaged them in sports and helped them recover. The team also trains and sends kids for nationals and other competitions.
The Throwball Federation of India is organizing the National Throwball Championship on 29th-31st October 2021. Youth from the academy have qualified for this. They come from low-income families and do not have the means to pay for the costing of the competition. The venue is in Rohtak which is 344 kms away from the village.
3 youths have qualified to play on the team. Some of the participants on the teams have won the nerving battle against their addiction and have secured this second chance at life. All of the participants have trained earnestly for this opportunity. The academy along with the community is also working to meet the cost, as they are new their network is not vast enough to meet it in the respected time.
We urge you to support these teams and help them in reaching the nationals. This will not only give them a boost of confidence but also provide them with a sense of achievement and a life to be hopeful about. Lovepreet firmly believes that poverty shouldn’t dictate one’s destiny and everyone deserves a second and equal chance at life. Even a morsel of your support will contribute towards this larger goal, and we are counting on you!
The cost per head is 20,000/- and for 3 qualified participants it will be 80,000/-
