Help Arindam Chatterjee Survive

My son met with a major road accident on October 7th, 2019 while returning home at night at Haldibari Road, Dooars, Jalpaiguri. When the police discovered him early next morning, he was sent to the nearby hospital. Witnessing his condition, he was referred to another hospital which was capable to treat his injury. He was diagnosed with severe brain haemorrhage with lots of breakage of facial bones including both upper and lower jaws. Due to his grievous brain injury, he was summarily operated and the doctors were able to salvage the brain injury to a large extent. He was in ICU for eighteen days post-surgery (7 days in ventilation). When he regained his consciousness, the doctors inferred that though he would be able to walk and talk, the brain injury has probably completely damaged his eyesight.

The hospital bill has already exceeded Rs 6 lacs (INR 6,00,000/-). I was able to gather around Rs 3 lac (INR 3,00,000/-) but still a large amount of money is already pending. I am just an anganwari worker and its' beyond my capacity to gather more than what I have already gathered. I require a lot more money to just pay hospital bills due. His surgical craniofacial reconstruction, subsequent trauma rehab and eyesight treatment is pending and I don't know whether I will be able to provide for that.

So, a helpless mother (I lost my husband only couple of years before) is reaching out requesting your help so that she could provide for her child's medical expenses, to at least my boy can avail the required medical attention to bring him in normalcy.

Attached is one brief declaration from the hospital regarding his medical situation.

Thank you,
Swapna Chatterjee

Dear Supporters,

Here's a quick update on the health condition of Arindam - As of now, the update is, we are arranging for the surgery to place the skull back to his head which is kept inside his belly now.

And as per eyesight is concerned, he manages to see a glimpse of shadows a few times with his left eye. The retina check performed and those seem to be okay. But the nerves have dried up and as per doctors, the only miracle can bring back his sight completely.

After a couple of months of skull surgery, we are planning to take him to some good eye specialists.

Thank you all for your wonderful support and contributions. Please keep sharing and supporting the campaign.

I have requested a withdrawal of the fund collected till now to Milaap. We, the whole family of Arindam, are deeply touched by this overwhelming support from all of you to help fighting the situation. I do not want to say "Thank you" as the feelings are much more than that and I can not remember any word to express that right now.

The primary surgeries are over, but the stability seems to be far away. As doctors mentioned earlier, the rehab is going to be the most crucial part. The three main difficulties we are facing now is, first, his brain is not functioning properly. He is uttering irrelevant words most of the time. Though he can recognize everybody by hearing them. Second, his eyesight is still blank. Though doctor said that once his brain starts functioning properly, he might start seeing again (probability is there but not 100% sure at this point). And third is, the part of the skull is still inside his stomach and will be placed back to the head once the brain starts functioning properly. But there might be a need to operate it again if everything is not alright inside the brain. Other than these, he is very weak now and cannot even stand properly. And it has become very tough for him to talk or swallow anything as his jaws have been operated and fitted with plates along with other plates in other areas of the face.

We have rented a house in Siliguri near to the hospital as commute time to his home is almost 3/4 hours by road. And he might not able to take the journey in case there is any emergency. My wife (Arindam's sister) and mother-in-law (Arindam's mother) along with other family members are staying with him right now.

Without the support we are getting from all of you and others also, it would have been very difficult to fight with this situation. We are now just can hope and pray for the best to happen.
