I am from Kannur, Kerala. At present I work as a freelance dancer, and have been taking dance classes online since the 2020 lockdown.
Earlier this year I applied for PERFORMACT (Torres Vedras, Portugal), an intense two year training program for dancers at an international level. After two rounds of auditions and an interview I have been selected for the batch of 2021-23. Classes start on October 4th. Receiving this news was a bitter-sweet experience; I was extremely happy for this huge opportunity, but also worried about how I would be able to afford the expenses that the course requires. All my savings have gone towards paying the advance fee for the course.Since the course is a professional training program and does not provide a degree/diploma upon completion, I have been unable to avail an educational loan. The purpose of this fundraiser is to raise the remainder of the course fee and living expenses.
I adore dancing. The artform is very intriguing. It gives me a lot of energy and inspires me. It surprises me every time I see someone dance. I have always loved performing, and being a professional dancer has always been my dream.
I first walked into a dance class as a 4 year old. At the time dance classes meant Bharatanatyam classes and so, my main dance training was in Bharatanatyam until I left home and Kannur to pursue Engineering Physics at NIT Calicut. In my school years I also explored folk, semi-classical, Bollywood and other South Indian classical art forms, but it was during college that my dance horizons were broadened.
The decision to take up dance as a career led me to Attakkalari Centre for Movement Arts in Bangalore. I graduated with distinction in my diploma in Movement Arts and Mixed Media. It was here that I discovered my specific interest in Contemporary Dance.
Since then I have been working as a freelance dancer in Bangalore. I am associated with multiple companies and dance schools in the city where I train, teach, create and perform. I have also taken up solo projects with other individuals in the art industry.
At this juncture, I wish to further my training in Contemporary dance and art by joining the 2 year program at Performact, Portugal, where I will get quality professional dance training that is competitive at an international level.
These are difficult times. But if you have the means, I hope you will support me in this journey. Thank you so much.
