My name is Aditya Tiwari, and I’m a writer and activist from Jabalpur. In September 2021, I will be embarking on a new part of my life, as I pursue a Master’s in MA in Broadcast and Digital Journalism at the University of East Anglia in Norwich, England. I received an unconditional offer to study, along with a £5000 UEA Postgraduate India Award. Despite that, I do not think I'll be able to get through.

Through my personal experiences, I've come to recognize the power of my voice by writing about the queer conversations and issues that surround LGBT people in small towns, India. Over the years, I have shared my poetry and writing with people around the globe and used it as a way of activism and rebellion.

As background, growing up gay in non-metropolitan India was very challenging for me. I was subjected to a complex slew of names, identities, and gestures. I grew up playing variations of myself to minimize humiliation and prejudice. The challenges that I faced could have easily pushed me to withdraw from my education, but I kept myself motivated and along with studies, I found a new way to express myself which turned into a career path. I believe that I am an essential asset for my country who is contributing my voice to the development of the gay rights movement.

I am asking for donations, big or small. The goal goes towards travel, moving, housing, and other living expenses.

What your donation will go to:
Room and board including housing costs, food, utilities, and other essentials
Textbooks and school supplies
Administrative school fees and health insurance
Transportation costs including airfare from India to England
Local transportation and miscellaneous expenses while living in England

My goals:
I have so many ambitions in life: to become an acclaimed writer and an advocate for my community; and to help fundamentally change the way LGBT people are treated in society so that everyone has equal opportunity. Most importantly, I want to give back to my community through my education, writing, and activism. My studies at UEA are an important step in building a life that I can be proud of and in supporting my family and community in India. Because to this date, being openly gay in India is a political proclamation, which has its fair share of both glory and pain; because when you accept yourself for who you are, you’re suddenly in opposition to everything – society, religion, and the state.

Thank you so much for considering supporting me in achieving these goals, it makes all the difference.
