I am Swathi, a student at IIT Madras. I was working with a group that provides basic COVID relief to workers in Hyderabad, India when I came to know of Abida Jabin. She had lost her husband, who was a wage labourer, a few days back and was in severe pain from Stage III ovarian cancer. She was suffering at home as her family could no longer afford even basic hospital charges.
I talked to her eldest son Abdul Nafe, who has this to say:
My name is Abdul and I am here to raise funds for my mother Abida Jabin's cancer treatment. She is 40 and a mother of six children. On 30th June 2020, my father, a wage labourer, died leaving her our only parent.
My mother has been suffering from ovarian cancer for more than a year and is now in severe pain.
Till date, we have spent about Rs. 7 lakh on nine rounds of chemotherapy at Omega Hospital, Hyderabad. The doctors prescribed more rounds of chemotherapy followed by surgery. We had run out of all our savings and loans by then. We were not able to fund further treatment and my mother's condition worsened to Stage III. The cancer spread to her liver. To add to it, my father left us recently. My brothers are still in school and we are left with no more hope. That is unless you support us.
The doctors have estimated the total cost of the treatment (chemotherapy plus surgery) at Rs. 15 lakh. We need to raise this money in two months. We also need around 50,000 within this week, so that my mother can be re-admitted to the hospital and begin chemotherapy.
