Recent happenings at Tezpur's Chowk Bazar are nothing short of a horror story. Over 300 shops were gutted by a fire that broke out on the 10th of May. Around 500 families have lost their livelihood amongst what is now strewn rubble all while the country battles one of the worst pandemics.
In order to assist the families affected, we are currently raising funds to assist around 70 wage workers who need support regarding food, medicine, and education. We provide weekly ration kits containing 3 kg of rice, 1 kg dal, 1 kg sugar, 1/2 L mustard oil, 1 kg potatoes, 1 kg onion, 100 g Haldi, one packet of tea leaves and dried fruits. This relief also covers the medical expenses of the families as per prescriptions for a month. In addition to this, we are also providing financial aid to the workers' children for their school/college/university fees. So far, a total of 68 families have been reached out to with the help of a local team based in Tezpur. Still, more than half of the affected families are yet to receive any form of support.
We believe it is imperative to come together to provide aid to workers and their families who have lost not only their daily income to a fire outbreak, but have also been stranded to bear the labour market impacts of COVID-19.
