In India, menstruation is surrounded by myths and misconceptions with a long list of “do’s” and “don’ts” for women. These menstrual practices are still considered taboos to discuss as a result of which, adolescent girls lack knowledge and remain ignorant of the scientific facts and hygienic health practices, which may result into adverse health outcomes. Not just adolescent girls, even old women do not clearly understand the reason it happens and don't know that it is a natural thing to happen to women. Because it is hushed, majority of girls do not understand the changes the body goes through and how to cope with it. Most importantly, they aren’t aware of how to maintain a proper menstrual hygiene.

Poor menstrual hygiene is one of the major reasons for the high prevalence of reproductive track and urinary track infections in the country and contributes significantly to female morbidity.

Good menstrual practice includes changing of pads every 4-5 hours and wrapping it in a paper before disposing it off, washing vagina regularly during periods which will help prevent the growth of harmful bacteria, using soap to wash your hands.

Hamari Pahchan NGO has been working on several initiatives to try to do away with social inequalities. One of their many awe inspiring projects is Project Sukhad, which endeavours to help underprivileged women spend their periods comfortably with proper means and information.
