I am Suhail Mehraj, a first year undergraduate student of Amarsing College, Srinagar, J&K. I have been selected as a member of 2018 Winter Youth Assembly at United Nations. A unique platform for fostering dialogue and generating partnerships between exceptional youth, civil society, the private sector and the United Nations.
I have been invited to speak on the “Role of Education in bringing change” with context of Jammu & Kashmir in the annual gathering of hundreds of young people from around the world who are working in their home communities to advance the United Nations’ Sustainable Development Goals.
I am leading a volunteer initiative on literacy for first generation learners since last 3 years. The project was started in district Ganderbal, central Kashmir, in 2015 and has spread to other adjoining districts with participation of youth volunteers. The aim of this initiative is to enhance quality of education for children of socio-economically backward classes. The volunteers work with children, parents and community focussing on increasing learning levels, health-hygiene and environmental conservation. Till now, the project has impacted lives of more than 1000 children. I sincerely believe in power of education to bring positive change and achieve SDG 4 for a sustainable world.
The Youth Assembly is an opportunity for a diverse group of young people, with different perspectives and experiences to address some of the most important issues facing mankind. It will be a wonderful chance for me to connect with youth around the world and learn about their experiences and ideas. The network of such people shall also help me in implementing some of the best practices in the aforementioned themes from across the world to Kashmir. I believe that Youth Assembly will dramatically expand my capabilities in positively impacting the community.
In this regard, I am looking for financial support for attending the Winter Youth Assembly in February, 2018 at New York City. As a student with low-income family background, I have limited resources available to me. It would be helpful if you can support for the expenses related to travel and lodging amounting to a total of approx. $2900 (INR 1,88,000).
