“I have never seen my daughter. God made me blind, but he gave me eyes outside my body. My daughter. But she is now struggling to stay alive and I am unable to save her.
41-year-old Bhimsen is a blind sitar master. Blind since birth, he plays the sitar for the All India Radio- Doordarshan. He is very well known and adored in Bhubhaneshwar- his place of birth.
Bhimsen is generally a contented and optimistic man. However, he is currently very worried because his six-month-old baby girl who needs an urgent heart surgery to live.
Bhimsen met his wife through a mutual friend at the All India Radio. His wife Ranjita is a housewife. The couple has been happily married since 2010. After 7 years of marriage, they had a baby daughter.
“Here, people pray for a son. I always prayed for a daughter. Only a Gudiya can understand dil-ki-baat”
And Bhimsen was overjoyed when his wish came true. He and his wife have been blessed with a baby girl- Subhashree. She is 6 months old now.
However, the couple’s joy came to a standstill once they discovered that Subhashree has a birth defect in her heart. The only option that can save her life is a surgery. This costs more than Rs 3 lakhs. This is a huge amount for the family.
Bhimsen is struggling to arrange money for her treatment
Blind from birth, Bhimsen has adapted and thrived inspite of the challenged thrown at him. He completed his post Graduation in Sitar Music from Bhubhaneshwar. Bhimsen is helpless only during medical emergencies- the last time being when his wife Ranjita was pregnant.
Now, he waits in Bhubhaneshwar as his wife and younger brother traveled to Bangalore to consult doctors in Narayana Hrudayalaya for Subhashree’s treatment.
How can you help
Bhimsen earns around Rs 8000 a month. He takes sitar tuitions for 5-6 children a month. He can barely afford to support his family on this. He knows that he cannot afford the surgery for his baby girl with this salary, and he is terrified that she will not survive.
