Let's Empower The Students of Velachery!

"We worry about what a child will become tomorrow, yet we forget that he is someone today."

We are a team of four Fellows, working with Teach for India (Non-governmental and non-profit organization), and teaching 143 Grade 5 and 6 students in Chennai Primary School and Chennai Higher Secondary School, Velachery, Chennai.
We believe that one’s circumstances should not decide where one goes in life or what one becomes. Though our children come from very challenging circumstances, their inquisitiveness and ability to dream beyond their contexts keep us rooted to the cause.
We believe that every child is capable of being at his/her best if given excellent knowledge, skills, values, mindsets, access and exposure. Thus fellowship for us is more than just teaching inside a classroom. We want to create opportunities for our students to access the quality education he deserves, inside and outside the classroom.

To educate our children into creative, confident and empathetic individuals we have a year-long plan encompassing all aspects of holistic education like academics, sports, arts, soft-skills, etc.
We need all the help we can get from you to take this plan forward.

 Our plan will include:
 1) ‘Kalaiyum Panbum’- Our annual cultural festival where students from all classrooms get to showcase and celebrate their talents.
 2) Velachery Tales- A student-led publication project where the children will write and compile their short stories into a book.
 3) Renovation of Library- School Project. We wish to update our book collection based on student interests, needs and reading levels.
 4) Smart Classroom- We require two audio-visual setups including projectors, screen and speakers.
 5) Field Trips- We want to enrich the learning experience of our children by taking them for educational trips in and around Chennai.
 6) Sports equipments
 7) Bringing experts from diverse fields.
 8) Classroom supplies, stationary, lab equipments etc.

Let’s help the students of Velachery get what they deserve.

 If not you, then who?
 If not now, then when?

Dear Supporters,

Firstly, heartfelt gratitude from Velachery School for your kind contributions towards the excellent education of our students.
We are excited to share with you the story of this academic year which is closing nearly soon. We have had a great year filled with lots of learning, successes, opportunities and happiness. We were fortunate to have received opportunities to have external partnerships outside Teach for India, including Thrive Foundation for Socio-Emotional Learning classes and Involve for Peer-Teaching sessions in our classrooms.

Our biggest success this year has been the 'Go-Laadli Challenge' which is a global problem solving competition for higher secondary girl students. We are happy to inform you that three of our students from grades 11 and 9 have received a scholarship of INR 1 Lakh for their college education and also will be counselled by expert mentors from US.

We are also excited to let you know that one of our students from grade 6 was selected to the top 8 in a  science fair "Wings to Fly" organized by Rotary club in association with Greater Chennai Corporation and  will be travelling to Singapore for an educational tour in June 2019.

We are also happy to share the 'Design for Change' (DFC) project done by our grade 5 students. The details of the project can be found here,

To sum it up, it has been a great year for the students and teachers alike and we would like to acknowledge your support in making it possible.
