Support Bihar’s Homeless Families during the Monsoon
Thousands of Bihar’s homeless families have been living on the streets for decades. The homeless community is one of the most vulnerable groups in the city. For them living with insecurity is a part of life as they are constantly susceptible to threats, both natural and human-made. Many have been living in these conditions for generations even though they are citizens of this country who contribute immensely to its economy and public life by casting their votes during elections and earning their living through hard work as labourers and wage workers. Their situation worsens during the Patna monsoon in which it is difficult for them to maintain their fragile shelters. The city has just nine homeless shelters -- and none where families can stay together.
Smile Care Foundation is one of the only NGOs in Patna working to improve the lives of the city's 150,000 homeless citizens. We empower the homeless, mainly women, to understand their rights and gain access to essential documents and programmes, including food rations and government poverty-alleviation initiatives. Our task is enormous. We are a small team working to tackle one of the most difficult situations in the city.
In preparation for the monsoon, we seek your support in providing for homeless families during extreme flood events through our emergency fund. The monsoons are a particularly difficult time for the homeless who face loss of identity documents, exacerbation of health problems, susceptibility to diseases (including vector-borne diseases such as malaria), disruption of education for children, loss of livelihood, and loss of dignity. The funds will go towards supporting our work, providing food and grains, blankets, and other kinds of emergency aid to homeless families during the monsoon. We need your help to take this first step in making a real impact on the lives of Bihar’s homeless.
